ATM Card Swap Helper Scam through an app

How it looks through an app, the red flags and what to do.

The app is the scammer's way in: it can read what is on the screen, collect contacts and push you to pay. ATM Card Swap Helper Scam is one of the ways this shows up: A 'helpful' stranger at an ATM watches your PIN and swaps your card for a similar one, then withdraws your cash.

What atm card swap helper scam looks like through an app

• A "KYC", "challan" or "bank rewards" app from a link.
• An .apk file sent on WhatsApp or by SMS.
• An app outside the official store that asks for many permissions.

The scammer waits near an ATM, especially at a quiet one or at night, and watches for people who look unsure, such as elderly users or first-time users. When someone struggles, they step in with an offer to help, or they stand close behind and watch the keypad, which allows them to see the PIN you enter in a hurry.

Red flags to check on the app

• A stranger offers to help at the ATM.
• Someone stands close behind you or watches the keypad.
• You are asked to try your PIN again several times.
• Your card is returned slowly or after a distraction.
• The app does not come from the official store listing of the company.
• It asks for accessibility, screen overlay, SMS or contacts without a clear reason.

What to do

1. Refuse help at an ATM and ask the bank guard or staff if you need it.
2. Cover the keypad with your hand when you type the PIN.
3. Check the name on your card before you walk away.
4. Do not install it. If it is installed, uninstall it now (Settings, Apps).
5. Open Settings and check Accessibility, Device admin apps and Install unknown apps for anything you do not recognise.
6. Change the passwords of your bank and email from a clean device if the app had access.

Report the fake app to the store it came from and, if money moved, call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.

If money or a code is already gone

1. Call your bank on the number on your passbook or a spare card and block the card at once.
2. Call 1930 and give the withdrawal details and time.
3. Report to the bank branch and at https://cybercrime.gov.in with the alerts and location.
4. Ask the bank for CCTV details of the ATM to support the report.
