Spyware

Spyware is hidden software that secretly watches what you do on your phone or computer and sends the details to someone else.

Spyware: Spyware is software that hides on a device and quietly collects information. It may record calls, copy messages, track location, capture photos or log what you type. The collected data is sent to whoever controls it, often without any visible icon or warning on the device.

Spyware can be planted by a criminal through a malicious link or file, or by someone who gets a few minutes with your unlocked phone. Some spyware is sold openly as a monitoring tool. In India, it is often installed by a controlling partner, a business rival or a fraudster who wants your banking messages. Some versions even switch on the microphone or camera, so the person watching can listen to your surroundings.

Because it hides, you must look for clues: unusual battery drain, high data use, a warm phone when idle and unknown apps with powerful permissions. Check Settings for apps with accessibility or device admin rights. If you find something suspicious, back up your photos, then reset the phone and change your passwords from a clean device. Do not wait for proof; a cautious check costs little compared to a stolen account.

Tips

• Review apps with accessibility, device admin or location access and remove any you do not recognise.
• Set a strong screen lock and never hand your unlocked phone to people you do not fully trust.
• If spyware is likely, change passwords from another clean device first, then reset the phone.
