eSIM

An eSIM is a SIM built into the phone that is set up digitally with a QR code or app, so no physical card is needed but SIM swap fraud still applies.

eSIM: An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone. Instead of putting a plastic card in a tray, you set up your plan by scanning a QR code or using the operator's app. It lets you switch plans easily but still depends on how well the operator checks identity.

Fraudsters know that eSIM activation is done by a QR code or a link, so they may call a user and ask them to scan or approve something to move the number. The result is the same as a normal SIM swap: your number works on their device, and your OTPs reach them. Your phone maker's and operator's apps show which eSIMs are active, so look at them sometimes.

An eSIM has one real advantage: a thief cannot just pull the card out of a stolen phone. Even so, protect it the same way. Use a lock on the phone and never scan a QR code or tap an approval you did not start. Ask your operator which steps its eSIM process uses. If your signal drops after a call about eSIM, act as you would for any SIM swap.
