Browser cookies
Browser cookies are small files that websites store on your device to remember you, log you in, or track what you view across sites.
Browser cookies: Cookies are small pieces of data a website stores in your browser. Some are useful, like keeping you logged in or remembering your cart. Others are used to track your visits across sites so advertisers can show you targeted ads.
When a website asks you to accept cookies, it usually separates essential ones from analytics and advertising. Essential cookies keep the site working. Advertising cookies can build a profile of what you read and buy. Accepting all is easy, so it is the default for most people, which is why many sites place it as the big, bright button. Cookies themselves are not viruses, and many are harmless.
You can choose more privately. Pick "necessary only" or manage preferences where offered, clear cookies now and then, and use a browser's tracking protection. Also remember that a stolen session cookie can let someone enter your account without a password, so avoid unknown browser extensions and log out of sites on shared computers. Every website you visit may set several, so a quick cleanup now and then keeps your browser tidy.
Tips
- Choose "necessary only" or manage preferences when a site offers it.
- Clear cookies from your browser settings once in a while.
- Log out on shared computers and avoid unknown browser extensions.
